I DID IT!!!!

Wow--it has been a busy week!! In the midst of lesson plans, IEP meetings, (I'm an EC teacher), holiday get-togethers, and just general business, I actually managed to finish my very first quilt EVER!!

I wanted to make a t-shirt quilt, also known as a memory quilt, with a bunch of old t-shirts. I am a t-shirt junkie and these oldies have been just taking up valuable drawer space that I need to fill with my new t-shirts! I saw the idea on Pinterest a couple months back and have been obsessed with the idea ever since. I was surprised how quickly it came together--just over a week from start to finish!! I took it to my parents house and my parents were so impressed!! My dad has now pulled out about 30 of his old Harley Davidson shirts that have been just sitting in drawers and wants one! (I think I just figured out where my t-shirt collecting comes from!)

I'm going to do a separate post on step-by-step instructions on how I made it, but I did want to go ahead and put a post out with a pic of my first quilt! With the success I've had, I think it's safe to say I'm slightly hooked on quilting!

Meet Si

Well, to begin my endeavor, I knew I would need a sewing machine! (Genius, right?!) I had been drooling over the Singer Confidence Quilter that I saw on the Missouri Star Quilt Company's YouTube tutorials.Well, when I got home last Tuesday, my sweet hubby had surprised me with my very own as an early Christmas present! YAY!! I immediately tore the box open, pulled everything out, and "commenced to pressing buttons" to get it all figured out! Then, I thought twice, popped the instructional DVD in, and learned the correct way to operate my new baby!

After watching the DVD, I pulled out some scraps of fabric that I had cut for the specific purpose of practicing sewing on my new machine. As I was practicing, my hubby turned on some Duck Dynasty episodes that we had DVR'ed. We LOVE that show--if you haven't watched it yet, try it sometime! They are an amazingly HILARIOUS family from Louisiana that struck gold with their line of duck calls. All the men have beards that rival ZZTop's famous facial hair! The best part of this family is that they are Christians, so you can watch it without the incessant beeping out of curse words! Our favorite characters are Jase and Uncle Si. Those two are their own comedy act!

Anyway, one of the episodes that we recorded was the one where all the daughters-in-law decide they need to sew Miss Kay (the matriarch of the Robertsons) a new apron for her because she is very well "blessed in the chest" and always gets flour on her shirt where her boobs stick out of her apron. The girls attempt, rather unsuccessfully, to create Miss Kay's apron. As they are trying to figure out what went wrong, Phil and Si, Miss Kay's husband and his brother, walk in and see the trouble the girls are having.

Phil and Si are, for the most part, manly men. They catch their own meat, love to hunt and fish, and live their days in camo! Phil was a first string quarterback who started ahead of Terry Bradshaw and Si is a Vietnam vet who spent 20+ years in the Army. We aren't talking about some sissy boys here! So, imagine everyone's surprise when Si tells the girls to move over and let him at the sewing machine. He said that in "Nam" he learned to sew everything, including beaver pelts and humans to name a few. When he finished, he held the prettiest little apron you ever did see! It was adorable with a halter top design to cover Miss Kay's chest and pretty ruffles on the bottom. Si said it shouldn't come to any surprise to them because he is "a Jack of all trades!"

As we sat there laughing so hard tears were rolling, I decided right then and there that my new work horse was going to be named Si! I name everything--cars, lawnmowers, vacuum cleaners--if its got a motor, its gotta have a name in my book! My Corolla's name was Lola, my husband's Jeep is Tuffy, our John Deere riding mower is JD--it's a sickness really! So since my new machine is going to be its own "Jack of all trades" by sewing whatever crazy ideas I get to create, my new baby will be named Si! I am sure he and I will have many happy years together! And "that's a fact Jack!"

Wish me luck!

Hello, my name is Amanda and I am a self-proclaimed "craft-oholic!" My mom taught me to crochet at 8-years-old and I've been hooked on creating beautiful things ever since! In my 30 years, I have crocheted, cross-stitched, scrapbooked, knitted (rather unsuccessfully), and generally crafted my way through the world...well at least through the South! I also LOVE to cook and bake and have become quite successful in that endeavor as well. I, for one, feel that cooking and baking are their own crafts as well--I create beautiful meals and desserts that are tasty and fulfilling to my family and friends. Yum!

However, as much as a craft crazy lady that I am, there is one craft I have never tackled--SEWING!! Now, I can sew a button on my husband's suit coat and can fix some holes now and again, but they are some ugly stitches to say it nicely! But I have always loved beautiful fabrics and wanted to make beautiful things with them. So--it's on now!! And while I know there are millions of craft blogs out there, I'm throwing my name in the hat as someone that is BRAND NEW! So feel free to join me as I stitch, darn, and quilt my way into the new world of sewing!
